It takes a special person to be able to handle a special needs child. Whether that child has, ADHD, Reactive Attatchment Disorder, Trauma Disorder ect. It takes a lot of patience, alot of courage and alot of sanity. You can go from a happy child, to a child having a mental breakdown in the middle of a store, screaming so loud that you would think the whole store can hear. People making comments under their breath and giving you dirty looks. The whole thing is super stressful; sometimes we just want to crawl under the covers and stay there the rest of the day. But we don't, because we are the only ones who advocate for them to get the resources and help that they need. They don’t understand just like we don't and we are learning right along with them. Sometimes, they can go from happy to violent in a split second and you will never see it coming. All they know is they are angry and scared thinking that this is the best way to handle it. None of us fully know what we’re doing, but we all do our best to help them and keep them as safe as we can. We have to make unbearable choices we never expected to make when we thought of having kids. We gather all the information that we can and look at all of our options before we make a decision on anything. We go over it over and over in our heads just to make sure we are making the right decision for our children. We all feel like we are failing our children, but in reality we are helping them by just being there. A Lot of the time that scares them, but it does make them feel just a little bit safer, even if they do everything to push you away. Eventually they will realize that you are a safe place and they can trust you to stay. They are going to push boundaries and they will push by getting violent, like punching holes in the walls, hurting themselves, trying to hurt other people because it makes them feel better. But the more you are just present and you don't leave them, the more safe they will feel.
